Easter Sunday

Psalm 149 Verse 1 and Psalm 50 Verse 6

Praise the Lord.[a]

Sing to the Lord a new song,
    his praise in the assembly of his faithful people.

Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.

Hallelujah! This is a joyous day! Our hope has returned our hope for tomorrow and the rest of time. We praise and thank you infinite God.

Prayer: We bless you for your love for us and for the sacrifice of your son. He is risen. May we remember your love for us each and every day!

Holy Saturday

Psalm 22 Verses 1-2

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so far from saving me,
    so far from my cries of anguish?
My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
    by night, but I find no rest.[b]

Holy Saturday , a bleak day. Jesus is in the grave. The disciples have gone away. They think it is all over. Nothing will ever be the same. God has forsaken them.

We are lucky. We know the end of the story so it is hard for us to feel what they were feeling. It’s hard to imagine the end of all hope. But God hs a plan.

Prayer: God our hope, support us when we can’t see the new day coming. Be with us in the bleak times and show us the way to the light. AMEN

Good Friday

Psalm 22 Verses 14-15

 14 I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
    it has melted within me.
15 My mouth[d] is dried up like a potsherd,
    and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

Jesus was poured out like water, bones broken and he thirsted. I’s as if the Psalmist knew what was coming. He went willingly to his death. There were other options. He could hae made other choices…. but he chose this way. He choose to die.

Now we need to show that it matters… . we understand the sacrifice. We know what it means. AMEN

Prayer: Loving God, you understood our need to see you in human terms. Thank you for his gift to us. AMEN

Maundy Thursday

Psalm 94 Verse 7

 They say, “The Lord does not see;
    the God of Jacob takes no notice.”

This is the beginning of the end…. the day when Jesus eats with his disciples and tells them goodbye. The day when the disciples begin to realize that Jesus is not the person they thought he was. This kind of end is not what they expected. God is not becoming an earthly king… a person of earthly power. God, in heaven, seems not to care.

Yet… Jesus knows that something more important is about to happen. God’s plan is grander than anyone can imagine.

It still is.

Prayer: O Holy God, your plan is beyond our understanding. Your wisdom is infinite. Help us to trust your love for us and out world. AMEN

Psalm 143 Verses 7-8

Answer me quickly, Lord;
    my spirit fails.
Do not hide your face from me
    or I will be like those who go down to the pit.
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
    for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
    for to you I entrust my life.

We need to tell God everything. Don’t be afraid he can take it. If you are angry with God tell Him so. Ask Him why things are not fair. Pour out your worries to Him. God is listening. He feels our pain and sees our tears. Always! Just remember to wait for Him.

Prayer: Hear us , O Lord, hear our deepest and most secret thoughts. Come quickly to bring your peace, Come Lord.. ..Come! AMEN

Psalm 148 Verses

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,
lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
    stormy winds that do his bidding,
you mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars,
10 wild animals and all cattle,
    small creatures and flying birds,

When we read these verses we can feel the beauty of creation. “And it was good.” What has happened? It was good and we changed it. We are more important. We have pillaged the earth and now we will reap the consequences. I don’t know where I heard this but in the past I heard a scientist say that the earth could support 4 billion people. We now have more than 7 billion. Someone said to me “well we are doing ok.” Yes we are but how about all those people who aren’t. There are people starving and dying everywhere.

God must be weeping. We need to make saving the earth a global issue. I know this sounds impossible but each of us is one. If everyone would help things could get done. The beauty is being lost and we are to blame.

We are not God

The earth was here before us

and given to us

Pope Francis

Prayer: Loving God, forgive us for raping the earth. Remind us that we were to be stewards, Help each of us to do what we can.

Psalm 94 Verse

18 When I said, “My foot is slipping,”
    your unfailing love, Lord, supported me.
19 When anxiety was great within me,
    your consolation brought me joy.

I am really good at worrying. I’m sure that a lot of us are. It’s hard to turn off your mind and let go of whatever is bothering you. Even when I try to let go of it I keep picking it back up again. When worry, anxiety and depression fill us up it pushes out all our good feelings and takes over. Then we have to struggle to reclaim the promises that you have made…that you will heal all our ills, save us from the storm and keep us safe.

Prayer : God of compassion, hold us safe in your arms and when worry comes fill us with you love, healing and peace. AMEN

Palm Sunday

Psalm 95 Verses 1-3

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;
    let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
    and extol him with music and song. For the Lord is the great God,      the great King above all gods.

This is an upside down day. In many churches we begin with a joyful procession with palms and joyful music and then we end with the reading of the passion. Much like our lives. We can go so quickly from joy to sorrow and back again. I have often thought pof the song “What a difference a day makes.” It does make a difference. Even one moment can change our lives. The one thing that never changes is God’s love for us. Rest in that certainty.

Prayer: Lord God, help us humans who have such trouble with change. Teach us not to fear but to know that you are with us forever. Guard us God. AMEN

Psalm 139 Verse

    23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my anxious thoughts.

Sometimes our thoughts are restless. Sometimes we are so sure of things and at other times sure of nothing. It is easy for our faith to waver back and forth. Sometimes we feel such peace and know that God is with us. Other times we feel lost and adrift…fearful and alone.

You, Lord understand our ups and downs. Help us to understand that faith is not related to feelings. Faith is not a noun it is a verb. It is an action word. It is more about who I am than how I feel.

Prayer: Thank you for forgiving our times of doubt and fear. Remind us that feelings get in the way of faith. Faith is about how we live rather than how we feel.

Psalm 139 Verses 13-14

13 For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.

Our bodies are wondrous things. It is amazing that something so complex can work so well. It is so incredible to see a child born….to see the first breath drawn. All that grown from two tiny cells. It doesn’t seem possible. So beautiful and so fragile. Only God could create such beauty.

If only we cared for our bodies with equal fervor. We eat more than we should, smoke cigarettes’, don’t exercise and do lots of other things that wear us out before our time. We are not careful with God’s creation.

Prayer: Thank you God for the gift of life. Thank you for the bodies that you created to house our souls. May we learn to treat the temple of our soul with more caring. AMEN
