Psalm 69 Verses 1-3

Save me, O God,
    for the waters have come up to my neck.
I sink in the miry depths,
    where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
    the floods engulf me.
I am worn out calling for help;
    my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,
    looking for my God.

There are times when everything seems to be going wrong. Nothing you try works. Things just keep going wrong. You pray and nothing changes. God doesn’t seem to hear.You pray some more….and still nothing. You have begged God for some help and no help is in view. It seems that God has deserted you.

God is there. Your cry has been heard. God is answering. The answer may not be the one we want. But God hears and acknowledges our prayer. Things will change for God loves us and knows what we need before we ask. Rest in that promise.

Prayer: “My God, my God why have you forsaken me?” You seem to have deserted me. I feel so alone. Help me Lord to know that you are near. Calm my fears. Bring me your peace. AMEN

Psalm 55 verses 6-8

I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
    I would fly away and be at rest.
I would flee far away
    and stay in the desert;[c]
I would hurry to my place of shelter,
    far from the tempest and storm.”

Do things get so bad that you feel like running away from home? I know that happens to me. Our problems just pile up and pile up and suddenly it is more than we can manage. We have so many people depending on so It’s not so easy to stop the world and get off. Our lives are surrounded by details and the sheer volume of them can bury us.

I love what the Psalmist says.” If only I (could) flee away to my place of shelter.”

The sad part is that we probably could take some down time if we would allow ourselves. We just don’t do it. We feel guilty if we do …and yet we could function better if we did.

Prayer: God of peace, show us how to take time away from the details of our lives. Take awa y the feelings o guilt and help us to spend time away from the everyday chaos and seek peace in your presence, AMEN

Psalm 51 Verses 11-13

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.

12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

It is easy for me to think that I am a really good person and then something will happen and I do something to hurt someone. It’s then I realize I am not as good as I thought. We don’t like to think of ourselves as capable of lacking compassion or being unkind. . I don’t like to think of myself that way.. I like to think of myself as caring and decent but we all do things wrong.

We are not perfect. We make mistakes and sometimes our bad behavior is not a mistake but a choice. Guilt is often our reward.

The good new in all of this is that God forgives us. He does not turn away from us or give up on us, He will help us to begin again. Thank you God!

Prayer: Forgiving God, turn us away from evil and make us clean again. Help us to consider our choices and make good ones. Let your Holy Spirit guide us to live a holy and blameless life. AMEN

Psalm 49 Verses 10,13,15-17,20

10 For all can see that the wise die,
    that the foolish and the senseless also perish,
    leaving their wealth to others.
13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[d]
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;
    he will surely take me to himself.
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.

20 People who have wealth but lack understanding
    are like the beasts that perish.

We all die. It is inevitable. A s the Psalm says “the wise die,
 that the foolish and the senseless also perish,” No one is exempt. Yet look at how much we spend on trying to live forever. We have face lifts and tummy tucks, hair pieces, expensive herbal treatments….anything that might work. We will die but death does not win. It is our connection and experience with God that will live on. If we spent as much time and money on our connection with God we would be deeply spiritual people. We would be spending billions on charities and doing God’s work on earth. What an idea!

Prayer: God of creation, you made us in your image. Help us to understand that aging is a part of that image. Teach us to spend time with you and follow your spirit instead of wasting time and money on efforts to look young.

Psalm 130 Verses 1-4

Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
    Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
    to my cry for mercy.

If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
    Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
    so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

Guilt is a terrible thing. It is so easy to hurt someone and so easy to remember that hurt, For some reason that guilt sticks with you. It doesn’t have to be something terrible. It may just be something we didn’t do that bothers us. God, however, does not remember those errors in our choices. He washes them away because of his redeeming love. Then we can move on to follow the path of Jesus and be God’s hands in the world.

Prayer: Forgiving God, you love us without judgment. Your love washes us clean and prepares us for the journey ahead.

Psalm 46 Verse 10a
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;

It is not easy for most of us to be still. Our society doesn’t help much. We an be reached wherever we are… in our cars…on the bech…in a boat….[laces where we went to get away. We are not “away” any more. How can there be room to listen? We hardly listen to each other much less to God. We pray but we don’t hear answers. We are told no prayer goes unanswered so it seems the problem is ours. We don’t hear the answer because we are answering our cell phones.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, craw near to us and still our hearts to hear your voice. We need your help to shut off all the “time saving” devices that are killing our peace. Speak to us in the silence. AMEN

Homework: Shut off your cell phone for one hour today.

Psalm 44 Verses 20-21

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21 would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?

Who or what is our God? Do we worship money?….or things? What is really important to us.? Someone once told me that you cna tell where our priorities lie by looking at our checkbooks or bank records. What is the first thing we decide to pay each month? Will it help others? We give lip service to our God but where our money goes tells a different story.

Do we really think that God doesn’t know our hearts. God can see all our fears and desires and greed. Yet he still loves us.

We need to put our abundance where Jesus has shown us.

Prayer: Lord of our hearts, you know all our secrets. You know all of our problems. We want to please you yet our fear of being without or not keeping up with oue neighbors gets in the way. Remove our fear and greed and use our resources to do your work. AMEN

Homework: Look at where your abundance goes. Do one thing extra this month to aid God’s work. Don’t let the amount stop you…remember the widow’s mite.

Psalm 44 Verse 1

1 We have heard it with our ears, O God;
    our ancestors have told us
what you did in their days,
    in days long ago.

Family stories are wonderful. Most of us have tales that we pass on to our children…about our own childhood or the live of our ancestors. We have traditions that we follow because those who went before us did them . Stories tell us who we are and how we are connected.

As Christians we are connected, not only by the stories of our own family, but also, by the stories in the Bible. The stories about Moses, Ruth, Abraham and others are our own stories. We need to pass them on to our children. How else will they know who they are?

Prayer: God of Abraham, Isaac, Ruth, and us we want to understand how we are all part of the same family. Remind us to pass the stories of our faith on to our children. AMEN

Homework: Tell your children the stories from the Bible.. Pass them on to the next generation.

Psalm 8 Verses 3-4

3 When I look at thy heavens, the work of thy fingers,
    the moon and the stars which thou hast established;
what is man that thou art mindful of him,
    and the son of man that thou dost care for him?

You are the Lord of life. What wonderous things you have done. The moon and stars are only a small part of your creation. You have given us so much beauty to behold. Yet we fail to see it. We don’t take time to look around at what God has done for us. God’s hand is in everything from the flowers of the field to the beauty of the ocean. We seldom pay attention. And yet…and yet he does not forget us. We are part of that creation and he remembers us each and every one. I wonder if we deserve so much.

What an amazing gift!

Prayer: Creator God thank you for all the wonders of the earth. Help us to remember that we are just caregivers and not owners. Help us to change our greedy ways. AMEN

Homework: Take some time to look at the beauty around us and thank God.

Psalm 139 Veerses 1-6

You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.

We forget that Gods is aware of everything that we do. We cannot hide from his presence. This is God God who is present with each of us every single day. God is within us. Many times we think of God as being in heaven or at a distance but this is not true. God is Immanent and Infinite…that means he is always here but his ways are more wonderous than we can imagine.

Prayer: Intimate and Infinite God, This Psalm clearly tells us clearly you understand us. Thank you for being in our lives. Remind us that you are with us in each moment. But also thank you for being far beyond our understanding. AMEN
